Are you wearing the right clothes? Recommended Outfits for Winter Travel in Hokkaido

If you’re traveling to Hokkaido from outside of Hokkaido, it’s hard to imagine how cold it is and how much clothing you should wear.

To help you out, here’s an easy-to-follow guide to what’s appropriate for each season!

Dress Code for Hokkaido in Autumn

September and October are the months when the foliage is at its best and the temperature starts to drop dramatically. The difference between the highest and lowest temperatures in Hokkaido is about 9°C to 10°C. There is a big difference between high temperatures during the day and low temperatures in the morning and evening.

Point.

  • A thin jacket or coat is required!
  • Shoes such as sneakers can be worn in early and mid-October, and in some areas the first snow falls in late October.
  • A light shawl may help on cold nights.

Dress code for winter travel in Hokkaido

The winter season is upon us, and snow is flying. Hokkaido winters are bitterly cold, so thick clothing is essential! Being careful is always a good idea.

Point.

  • Outerwear made of warm material (a hoodie is preferable in snowy weather)
  • It is safer to wear undergarments under your clothes and tights of 110 deniers or more.
  • Shoes, such as non-slip boots (sneakers are more likely to fall).
  • If you spend a lot of time outdoors, you’ll also need additional heat protection such as gloves, earmuffs and a scarf!

Straight off the road! How to walk on a level surface

Are you afraid of walking on slippery, icy roads? That’s why our Gutabi staff living in Hokkaido will teach you how to walk in the snowy country!

When sightseeing in Hokkaido in winter, you will be less likely to fall if you remember this way of walking.

Point.

  1. Penguin Walking! Narrowing the stride, wearing out the entire sole, and scuffing the soles of your feet as you walk.
  2. Lift your feet in a steady rhythm
  3. Look at the roadway as you go, looking for areas where the roadway may be slippery, such as where there is snow on the ground.
  4. Be careful where there are pedestrian crossings and vehicle access because there is thin ice! Get out there and walk more carefully.

How’s it going? Do you think you can walk?

It would be safer if you still have winter shoes, but buying shoes on the go can be a bit of a burden. Please be aware of this walking style and enjoy sightseeing in Hokkaido.
