5 minutes from the airport! Don’t miss the Sarusan Onsen!

This hot spring resort is easily accessible, about 5 minutes by car from Hakodate Airport. The spring water is mainly sodium and calcium chloride spring water, which has excellent heat retention properties and is said to be effective for treating coldness and neuralgia. For a break from strolling, we recommend the footbath spot in front of the Yunokawa Onsen Electric Railway Station.

The monkeys bathing in the hot springs can be seen in the “Monkey Mountain Hot Springs” at the Hakodate Tropical Botanical Garden, located in a corner of the hot spring resort area. (The Monkey Mountain Hot Springs are open only from December to early May.)

The reason why the water is blue is believed to be due to the formation of colloids when the Biei River mixes with the groundwater of Tokachi-dake volcano. The colloidal particles are scattered so finely that they scatter the sunlight evenly, allowing blue light with short wavelengths to reach our eyes and make it appear blue. Visitors can enjoy different blue colors depending on the weather, season, and time of day.
